There is often much confusion about the link: operator in google – some people still tend to believe that only backlinks from pages with PR > 4 are shown, or that what you get to see is the complete picture. Both is wrong! See for yourself what Matt Cutts from Google tells us about the link: operator:

I always thought that only back links with page rank more than four did show, so it was good to see this video to clear up all of those mysteries.
well, you can’t get a better explanation than that!
it’s nice to know that they (google) only return a sample of links rather than the whole lot which goes to explain why yahoo always shows more backlinks for my site.

Hi Andy
Nice to see you over here. Have you recovered from the latest ComLuv stress?

Yes, I am agree with Andy Bailey because we cannot get a better explanation about this topic. It is a really helpful video.

It was a great video. I learned a lot about back links. I also did not have the exact idea how Google check with the back links. The idea is clear now. It will help us making our site more SEO friendly. Thanks for the post.
I already predict this before seeing this video. Google hide true number of a website links. I also seen my links in webmaster central is more than in link:

This goes out to show that Google doesn’t want to give credit to other links and they don’t want to tell what they are looking for even when they pick the links to show. Sneaky!

It’s in line with my expectation, Googles hides as much information as possible to the outside world. Looking at the WMT you’ll get a much bigger number of backlinks, but I think even that this are not all as well.

I’ve never used webmaster tools but maybe I should to see thr PR. But I want to see my competitors
Thanks for the nice post. I understood the importance of back links. But i am not sure how Google is looking at the back links.I am creating back links from high page rank sites and blogs continuously for the last 3 months but i don’t see any change to my site. How is it possible?
Hi Ian
There are two factors to consider:
1: How strong is your competition (how many backlinks does your number one competitor have?)
2: Is your linking pattern still natural in Google’s eyes? (You should have links from low PR but relevant domains, too, you should have nofollow links, too, and you should have some links with link anchors like “Click here” or just the domain name, too, because all this is part of a natural linking pattern – if you don’t have this, google is going to notice an unnatural linking pattern and giving you a ranking penalty…

Thanks so much for another great post. This video is really informative. I was not aware that pr 0 pages still showed up. Thanks!
thanks for your video. Very informative and now I fully understood why backlinks is very important.
This is a great SEO site for me.
This just proves that some pr0 sites with low obl are worth than sites with higher pr but more obl on them.
