Getting free backlinks from blog comments

Getting links to to your site from other sites is what drives you up in the search engine rankings. Getting links with an anchor text that you can determine makes the real difference…

So how does this all work here?

First of all – you can get free backlinks, but it is a little bit of work involved… You have to find blogs that do not use the nofollow attribute in their links… What is the “nofollow attribute”? Basically it tells search engines to disregard the link to your site! So we need blogs that do follow (and of course have commenting enabled)!

Luckily, finding those is quite easy now, just go to the search form and enter a keyword or keyword phrase for which you want to find do follow blogs. This does not have to be the keyword that you want to rank for or that you want to use when you write blog comments, it just have to describe the topic you are looking for. In fact it is better to choose a broader approach, as you will receive more blogs if you use a more general search term.
When the system has finished checking all the sites for DoFollow, you will receive an email with a list of blogs for your topic – depending on how popular the topic actually is. Obviously this is the reason why you have to use a working email adress…

Now you can visit these no-nofollow blogs and leave a comment with some of your keywords in the “name” field and your website in the website field …and voila – you have a one-way backlink to your site with your keywords as an anchor!

So, why is it important to have dofollow blogs for your exact keyword phrases and not just any dofollow blogs? Well, to be honest, it is not so important at all – it just makes it easier for you to make quality comments to the blogs you found. And this is crucial! If you do not make sensible, thoughtful comments, your comments will be deleted! Or even worse: Your website might be added to blog spam filters what makes it hard to have your comments stick on other blogs as well… So to be on the safe side, have a look on the blog you are going to comment on. If there are already some comments with funny names that look more like keywords, go on and post your comment, if not perhaps just go on to the next blog in the list. It might not be worth the work if your comment is deleted.

So be sure to choose keywords that you know a little bit about, they should have to do with your site’s topic but you can try a broad range of related keywords if the search does not give you enough results. What can you do if the search only gives you a handful of blogs or no blogs at all? Well this can happen, as using the nofollow tag is the default in programs like wordpress, so it might be hard to find blogs. Don’t worry – Try to search with similar keywords or a broader keyphrase. The exact topic of the blogs does not matter to much – your links will be counted even if they are from a blog that is not related to the keywords of your site. What really matters is that you can choose the anchor text of your link.

There is a little work to do with this method, but it provides you with a virtually endless supply of free one way backlinks!

And now go to the search form and try it yourself!

I build my links on comments too. And thank you for advises you gave in the article. I’ve noticed that some big sites made their links only on comments. And most of them are nofollow. They are on good positions in Google. How you can explane it?

      Hi Gene

Hard to tell why someone is ranking good, if I can’t have a look at
      - the domain name and age
      - the onsite optimization
      - the backlinks profile
      - the competition

      I could not even guess…sorry

Thanks for this detailed information of linkbuilding via blog comments. I think that keywords should be added at the appropriate places, so if keywordluv is enabled then it should be OK. If only a name field is available, I can understand blog owners that they don’t like keyword-names. If you want to reply to a comment (even as a commenter yourself) it is easier to address somebody by name than by an anonymous keyword phrase.

Leaving valuable related comment on a relevant blog is a great and quick way to gain a back link, and which could possibly lead readers of the blog you posted on to your blog.
With a blog community, you are able to connect with the other bloggers and if they get wind of something you post that they’re interested in, you’re sure to get some audience to your blog. You can get constant readership with blog communities, especially if you are consistent with interesting and exciting posts.

Nice advice here, with so many different ways to search engine optimize a business or website it’s sometime hard to know which methods are more effective. I have adopted a number of different techniques and will definitely be adding this to my list. Blog comments not only serve as good back links to a website, if written well they can also inform and generate interest for a business the old fashioned way; through word of mouth.

Seriously, so many people dont understand the distinction between dofollow and nofollow….or maybe they’re just too lazy?

Good job clearing that up Michael. Probably wont change the spammers though, but if the bloggers community could lighten up and only accept valuable comments like you do, we might see a shift.

  19. Virginia from Lose Weight (1 comments)

I wouldn’t be so sure about nofollow. If you check some blogs, they have good SE positions, high PR and tonns of comments from nofollow blogs – how to explain this? I know, that there are lots of other factors that define PR and SERP but Google also doesn’t have a clear position regarding nofollow.

My own observations also show that most of the older blogs with high PR become nofollow while there are even more new quality blogs with dofollow and KeywordLuv.

getting back links from do follow blog commenting is a great way to increase your site serp ranking for targeted keywords.but when some one target blog commenting to increase their ranking they need to make sure couple of things:first:blog where you commenting must be from a authoritative site(eg:.gov,.edu etc),second:make sure the comment page has less then 40 outbound links(lesser the better),third:also like to point out that from my experience relevancy is irrelevant when it comes to do follow blog commenting, fourth:don’t try to varied the anchor text when posting comments to blogs .so if you choose high pr inner page blog(do follow) site with low out bound links for commenting & if your comment get stick then you will definitely gonna get link juice from that particular site whether it is relevant to your site or not.

I have found a great way to get backlinks. We offer a product and we have a large number of happy clients. We have managed to ask a few of them for a link to our site which surprisingly a few have been able to do. I think the value of this is these sites don’t have many outgoing links and it is hard for our competitors to get a link on these sites.

  26. ewan from seo services (2 comments)

Thank you for all the great information you have supplied. It is one of the hardest tasks of the web master or seo company to build quality one way links.
As you quite rightly point out it is much easier to use blogs which are themed to your topic as then you are able to comment with a certain amount of authority (if you know your topic).
We have many blogs and it does get frustrating sometimes when all the comments appear just to be spam. I look forward to mornings where at least one other blogger has made the effort t write something intelligible on our blogs.

You can try Fast blog finder, the link is in beneath the search form…

I dunno about backlinks and such, would something like the following work:

and as always, I bring the ((Commenter had inserted link here))

    1. Michael Busch (415 comments)

      Hi Samuel

Basically you got it – this would work if your link was appropriate to the page you are commenting on.
It was to a site that had nothing to do with the content of my page – most webmasters would just delete your comment for that.
Had you looked around on my site a little bit more you would have found the cartoon page which is much more on topic for your site.
If you had commented there and had shown a little bit more creativity in comment as why there was a need for a link in the comment instead of just using KeywordLuv, I would have left your URL in the comment.
But as you are new and now have a list of blogs, there is plenty of time to practice ;-)

I build my links through blog comments as well. I used to do normal blogs but my comments would no get approved. The reason I’m sure was probably because my name was nothing but my keywords. So now I’m searching for blogs that allow keywords so my comments can actually be approved.

    1. Michael Busch (415 comments)

It is a good idea to check existing comments – if there are already “keyword name” comments, then your chances that your comment will stay are really good. Always assumed, that you make a comment that really contributes to the topic…
